Essex Way relay

September 2008

This race covers the 82 miles of the Essex way from Epping Station to Harwich Old Lighthouse in 10 stages. The route is mostly cross country and can be difficult through crops and across ploughed fields. Nevertheless it is a very enjoyable day out in the most attractive rural parts of Essex (with an excellent fish and chip shop and pubs waiting for you at Harwich).

But we all know the Benfleet ladies won (again!)

(Back row Left to Right)    Louisa Latham, Debbie Slack, Sharon Garrard, Vanessa Dodds, Karen Goode

(Front row Left to right)   Catherine Stunt, Nicola Goode, Lucy Mancer, Debbie Gibbins, Jacqui Watson

Characteristics of the event as follows:

The 'spirit' of the race is low-key, friendly and cooperative, all competitors should try to support other runners and call them back if they are going off-route and all supporters should assist members of other teams if necessary.

As the name of the event suggests it is a relay, although not in the normal sense of the word. There is no touching hands at the end of each leg or the passing of a baton. Each leg has its allotted start time, so all runners start each leg at the same time, which if I remember correctly, more or less ties in with when the first runner appears on the scene from the previous leg. This way teams with slower runners are not left waiting a long way behind the faster teams, and thereby stringing the whole event out even longer.

There is no marshalling on the course or markers. Runners are encouraged or expected to have reccied the course prior to taking part to familiarise themselves with the surroundings.

Clubs must also support their own runners and see to their needs (i.e water, support etc).

Organised and supported properly it can be hugely enjoyable day, but to do it properly takes commitment.

Hi Folks,

Wasn't it a great day - weather was almost too good! Thanks to the numerous people who helped in so many ways (also in the weeks beore the event)
including co-operation to avoid the really congested parking places.Congratulatins to Springfield Striders winners of both sections. What about the two Pitsea teams dead-heating; what's the odds against that happening? The only route problem (apart from those self-inflicted!!)apparently happened on Stage 2 with an irrate farmer's wife/farmer berating us for going on private property so I'll establish exactly what the problem was there and get it 'sorted' for next year.

Robert

Well done to everyone who ran yesterday and thank you very much for volunteering to take part in this year’s highly enjoyable event.

There were a total of 37 teams competing which is the most since the race began in 1989 so that helped the more navigationally challenged runners I’m sure!!

Remember to keep next years likely date free, Sunday 2nd September, yes even you Steve !!!

FINAL ORDERS..........

FROM: ROBERT TEER - ROUTE - CO-ORDINATOR

Most of the route is in very good condition and we hope to alleviate the few
remaining problems before Sunday.  Rather than list them here we will tell
runners anything they need to be aware of at the start of their stage. Other
important considerations:

1. Let Derek Atkinson know if you are bringing teams and how many/team names
before the end of the week so he can prepare the scoreboard.  We do not need
names of individuals. Deljoy2@blueyonder.co.uk or Derek Atkinson's phone number is 01375 406125.

2. please avoid non-essential parking at the two very congested changover
points: Little Leighs (end of Stage 3) and West Bergholt (end of Stage 6).
It is helpful if other supporters park elsewhere and walk to these places -
car sharing is also to be encouraged to reduce the number of vehicles.  We
are expecting around 30 teams this year & don't want gridlock.

3. At West Bergholt Church runners must finish on the Essex Way (field edge
& over the final stile) and stay off the parallel private lane. Also
supporters should not run down that lane to encourage runners in - go back
down the Essex Way for this purpose.  The owner of the lane is definitely
not 'Mr Happy' and we try not to make waves.

4. Thanks to all those people who have assisted in revising stage
descriptions and reporting problems. Many of them have dealt/are dealing
with growth problems personally.  Thanks also to Kevin Wright who is
supplying a fine new trophy - at his own expense - for the ladies event.

Finally, please ask all of your runners to observe the spirit of the event.
Don't just follow other runners & then pick them off at the end, follow the
route as detailed on the stage descriptions & help others runners - as well
as your own - with drinks etc. It's very easy for any runner to get
separated from their support team.
