Saunders

   Mountain

       Marathon

             1st / 2nd July 2006

Q What Is It ? – Saunders as we call it, is a 2 day mountain navigation event, held on the 1st weekend of July in the lake district. Teams of 2 navigate between checkpoints to an overnight camp, spend the night in a tent, and then navigate back to the start by a different set of checkpoints. The team to complete the course the fastest wins.

Q How fit do I have to be ? – You have to be capable of “walking” 2 full days in the hills. As a runner your fitness level is already more than adequate.

Q What Special Skills do I Need ? – You need to be confident of your navigation skills, as checkpoints are often off the beaten track. However, we can train you in the skills you need. Clive does an excellent evening course in basic navigation, and we use the Bunkhouse Weekend to practice skills in the field. We also have a wealth of mountain experience within the club for any advice you may need.

Q What Special Kit do I need ? – Good Quality running Kit will see you though summer conditions in the hills, but you will need to have a lightweight tent, cooking equipment, and a 30l lightweight rucksack. These items can be borrowed from club members if you ask nicely .

Q How much does it cost ? – The Entry Fee is £60:00 / Team ( £30:00 ea ), plus you will need overnight accommodation on the Friday & Sunday nights before and after the event. As a Club we will try to arrange common accommodation for all the teams going, so we can meet up to tell tails of daring do ! You will also need to book the Friday and Monday off work for traveling.

Q How do I enter ? – Get an entry form off mike and send it off A.S.A.P. as the event fills up very quickly. Or visit www.slmm.org.uk for an entry form and more details of the event.
